"You ever going to feed me?" Vaughan gazes up at him from where he's lying draped across his unmade bed, his bottom lip jutted out as he studies him from under lowered eyelashes—his lashes are so pale they're almost translucent against his skin. Dramatic little shit, Huxley can't help but think, with a grudging fondness that's going to make his job ten times harder. "I'm like a plant, you know. I need proper nutrients to grow."

Huxley pinches the bridge of his nose, tempted to climb right back out the window and pretend he never accepted this job in the first place. Let someone else deal with the mother of all headaches for once.

"No—listen. Chicken enchiladas…with salsa verde. And no-knead bread…All the no-knead bread you can eat."

"Kid," he interjects before Vaughan has a chance to expound on the allure of no-knead bread, whatever that is. "I'm not your warden and this isn't a last-meal kind of situation." And if that's not clear enough for him, he decides to add in a no-nonsense kind of tone, usually reserved for unruly children...and Killian. "So no chicken enchiladas for you."

Blondie huffs. "You're mean."

A raspy chuckle leaves Huxley's throat, the sound pulling a surprised grimace from him. How stupid of him—to nearly fall into this kid's obnoxiously magnetic orbit. He shakes his head, as if to clear his mind of all unnecessary thoughts, distracting or not. "Drop the cute act, Vaughan. You're not fooling anyone."

Vaughan's quiet for all of ten seconds before he flashes a triumphant grin. "Awe. You think I'm cute."

Well…Shit. He walked right into that one, didn't he?
